Three Acts, Three Scenes
Your Care, My Care, Careful Care
Workshop with Kathleen McDermott
DIY Machines for Care
July 21, 2018, 2-4PM
In this workshop, led by artist Kat McDermott, participants learn how to open up recycled consumer electronics and identify and repurpose DC motors within them. Participants turn common, consumer electronics into “machines for care,” objects which are silly, gentle, nonsensical or soothing.
McDermott is a media artist with a background in installation and sculpture. She combines her
knowledge of fabrication and sculpture with open-source hardware to build a language of absurdity, using homemade electronic hardware experiments in a storytelling practice
sometimes referred to as “performance with robots,” or “critical wearable practice.” She received her BFA from Cornell University and her MFA in Creative Media from City University of Hong Kong. She is currently pursuing a PhD in
Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Her work has been featured in a range of major publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, and Dezeen, and
has been exhibited internationally.
In addition to her artistic practice, she is an advocate for accessible technology
education and actively seeks out opportunities to facilitate workshops and skill shares.
