Three Acts, Three Scenes

Your Care, My Care, Careful Care

June 24 – July 22, 2018

Kunstraum Gallery, Brooklyn, New York

Curated by Natalie Fleming and Conor Moynihan

Expanding notions of care through three curatorial “acts” composed of three artistic “scenes,” Three Acts, Three Scenes: Your Care, My Care, Careful Care features works that ask us to consider how we extend care to others, take ownership of our own care, and navigate the precariousness of the world.

“Act One: Your Care” begins with Joshua Rains, Kathy High & Michelle Temple, and Avye Alexandres, with works that examine how care is given—or taken—for the benefit of another. “Act Two: My Care” includes Dominic QuagliozziMiguel Bonneville, and Kat McDermott, who express how care can be redirected towards the self, both indulgently and out of necessity. “Act Three: Careful Care” concludes with Stephanie Rothenberg, Sharif Waked, and Kyla Kegler, whose work ruminates on larger systems of interconnectivity.

This exhibition travels from the micro to the macro, pivoting from an external focus on others to an inwardly directed self-care before reflecting on larger networks of care and precarity. In so doing, it reflects the situational and dynamic nature of care itself.
